SELF-ORIENTALISM REPACKAGED: WONG WING FRIED RICE

Globalization has prompted a multicultural retheorization of both consumer and market (Fu et al., 2014; Riefler 2012; Kipnis 2019). In short, the Canadian consists international goods which are authentic, domestic purporting authenticity (e.g., orientalizing), multinational, fusion innovations that authentic-ish self-orientalizing; Hui, 2019; Li, 2020; Stephens, 2021). What results is fetishistic commercialization multiculturalism, where brands packaging ethnicity race to vie for attention. This paper addresses latter variety — self-orientalist designed products born out (formerly) Chinese enterprises, namely Wong Wing Fried Rice. Developing an analytical theoretical approach can support identification racialization, racist typologies situated in graphic design. Themes derived from analysis include racism, orientalism, self-orientalism, exoticism, cultural appropriation, among others. Findings reveal how label design discursively negotiated as internalized racism anti-racist resistance, necessitating more nuanced reflects sociopolitical context branded. The adoption transversalist tenets, modality outlined by methodological component this study, presents one possibility.
